Reflections from IMPACT AMR Workstream 1

By Kristina Aluzaite.

As summer picks up, so does activity across the IMPACT AMR network. Over the past three months, I’ve been part of the Workstream 1, focused on defining the potential impacts of AMR-focused interventions from a broader, multi-stakeholder perspective. It’s been a busy and insightful phase—here are my three key reflections.

1. Looking Beyond Clinical Outcomes

There’s growing recognition that AMR interventions have effects well beyond health. Social, economic, and environmental dimensions matter, too. In our first workshop, we heard from researchers across disciplines—each bringing different perspectives, methods, and insights.

This broader lens is not just helpful — it’s necessary. Without it, we risk missing the crux of the issue: how interventions actually function—their mechanics, trade-offs, and unintended effects — in the complex, real-world contexts where they matter most.

If you haven’t already, please reach out to contribute to the summary document on AMR intervention impacts. And watch this space for outputs.

2. Facing the Data Problem

Data and knowledge gaps continue to be a central issue in AMR research and decision making. But even with more data, we need better ways to store, share, and use what we already have. As the complexity of the AMR challenge becomes clearer, we must also recognise the limitations of individual research teams and start thinking collectively about building better systems—for storing, sharing, and linking information across settings and One Health sectors.

Supporting AMR action requires more than generating data. It requires the infrastructure to make that data usable.

3. Momentum is Building—Now What?

There’s a clear appetite for collaboration. Across disciplines and sectors, people are ready to connect. IMPACT-AMR is helping create that space, and the energy has been palpable. The challenge now is to turn interest into action, and connection into coordinated progress.
